The Tooth Fairy Story Review: Animated Adventure with a Touch of Kid-Appropriate Tween Love Story
In this cartoon adventure for preteens, the world of fairies is dedicated to gathering baby teeth of slumbering children and placing treasure beneath where they sleep. Board-riding teenage rebel fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about devoting his life to collecting baby teeth—a feeling that’s entirely reasonable. He is just a bit more curious about the underlying economics of the situation: the fairies hand over the molars to mysterious goblins, who supply gold in exchange. But Van’s curiosity is piqued when he catches sight of a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who proves to be not at all the hideous creature he expected.
An Unlikely Bond and Common Enemy
The stage is set for an adventure with a gentle touch of teen romance (though it’s very much suitable for children). The fairy and goblin groups are separated from one another, and nothing fuels the excitement of secrecy to bring people as one. The two species portrayed in the film are remarkably alike, yet each holds prejudiced beliefs about the other. The fairies are said to be self-centered sorts, prone to taking whatever they fancy, while the goblins are allegedly stupid, foul-smelling, and backward, but are actually bright and advanced in technology.
Of course, such a setup needs a common enemy to unite against, and that need is met in the form of a group of vicious spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret with these guys: they want to eat the fairies and goblins, and they make for fairly bloodthirsty, though not particularly skilled, villains.
Target Audience and Overall Impression
You won’t find very many animated films aimed at the viewer group that is beginning to have first crushes, but aren’t yet old enough for whatever teenagers are watching instead of popular teen sagas. Should your youngster falls into this age group, it probably won’t to become their new all-time fave, but it’s a decent choice.
The Tooth Fairy Story releases in Scottish cinemas from 10 October and across the United Kingdom from 24 October.
