Marnus Labuschagne Dropped from Australia's ODI Team to Face India

Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from the three-match ODI series against India, with in-form Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw getting a unexpected selection.

Performance Issues Lead to Exclusion

The right-hander was left out from the ODI squad after being dismissed for one in his two batting efforts during the recent series against South Africa in August. Labuschagne has a top score of 47 in his last 10 ODI innings.

The 31-year-old has featured in 68 ODIs and accumulated 1,871 ODI runs at an batting average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now continue to press his claims a Test team comeback in time for the Ashes starting in Perth on 21 November.

Renshaw's Return and Team Changes

Recent performances suggest of a resurgence with a score of 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw scored a century for the Bulls in the identical match against Tasmania.

Renshaw is in line to make his ODI debut in the forthcoming series against India after previously being selected in an ODI squad in 2022.

The left-hander has played 14 Tests with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also aiming for a red-ball recall as Australia search for a solution to their top-order woes.

Bowling Additions and Fitness Updates

Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc makes a comeback for the ODI series against India after taking a break since excelling for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.

BBL performer Mitch Owen could make his ODI debut after sustaining a head injury in the build-up to Australia’s previous 50-over series against South Africa.

ODI captain Pat Cummins is still unavailable as he aims to recover from a spinal issue by the time to lead Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.

Squad Selection Strategy and Fixtures

Australia have named a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the Ashes approaching, although Glenn Maxwell will sit out the five-match series due to a wrist problem sustained in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 sides after hitting a ton in the final game against New Zealand to secure a 2-0 series win last week.

“We have named a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be player management through the later stages of the series as players get ready for the summer through domestic first-class matches,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an important period in the preparation for the World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously prepare specific players for the Test series ahead.”

Australia’s three-game ODI series against India starts on 19 October in Perth, before the rivals play five T20s from October 29.
