France's Premier Quits After Barely Three Weeks Amidst Broad Backlash of New Government

The French political turmoil has deepened after the freshly installed PM suddenly stepped down within a short time of announcing a government.

Quick Departure Amid Government Turmoil

Sébastien Lecornu was the third French prime minister in a single year, as the nation continued to stumble from one government turmoil to another. He resigned a short time before his initial ministerial gathering on the start of the week. Macron approved his resignation on the beginning of Monday.

Intense Criticism Regarding Fresh Government

Lecornu had faced intense backlash from opposition politicians when he revealed a fresh cabinet that was mostly identical since last month's removal of his preceding leader, the previous prime minister.

The presented administration was dominated by President Emmanuel Macron's supporters, leaving the cabinet almost unchanged.

Political Criticism

Political opponents said France's leader had stepped back on the "major shift" with past politics that he had pledged when he assumed office from the disliked Bayrou, who was removed on 9 September over a planned spending cuts.

Next Political Direction

The uncertainty now is whether the head of state will decide to end the current assembly and call another sudden poll.

Jordan Bardella, the leader of the far-right leader's political movement, said: "We cannot achieve a reestablishment of order without a fresh vote and the legislature's dismissal."

He added, "Obviously France's leader who determined this government himself. He has misinterpreted of the political situation we are in."

Vote Calls

The National Rally has demanded another vote, believing they can expand their seats and role in parliament.

The country has gone through a phase of turmoil and political crisis since the centrist Macron called an indecisive sudden poll last year. The legislature remains split between the three blocs: the liberal wing, the conservative wing and the moderate faction, with no definitive control.

Financial Deadline

A spending package for next year must be passed within weeks, even though government factions are at odds and the prime minister's term ended in less than a month.

Opposition Motion

Parties from the left to conservative wing were to hold discussions on the start of the week to decide whether or not to support to oust the prime minister in a no-confidence vote, and it appeared that the cabinet would fall before it had even started work. Lecornu apparently decided to leave before he could be removed.

Ministerial Appointments

Nearly all of the major ministerial positions revealed on Sunday night remained the same, including Gérald Darmanin as legal affairs leader and the culture minister as culture minister.

The position of economic policy head, which is essential as a split assembly struggles to agree on a budget, went to the president's supporter, a government partner who had previously served as business and power head at the beginning of the president's latest mandate.

Unexpected Appointment

In a surprise move, a longtime Macron ally, a government partner who had served as economy minister for multiple terms of his leadership, came back to cabinet as defence minister. This angered leaders across the spectrum, who viewed it as a sign that there would be no doubt or change of the president's economic policies.
